Removing dark circles under the eyes - possible causes & what you can do

Dark circles cast shadows under your eyes. You look tired, exhausted and perhaps even ill. What causes dark circles under the eyes and how can you remove them? Find out more. Possible causes of dark circles under the eyes

Iron deficiency

Even if dark circles under the eyes are not the only sign of an iron deficiency, they can occur more frequently with the deficiency. If the blood lacks iron, less haemoglobin (red blood cells) can be formed. As haemoglobin is the carrier of oxygen in the blood, less oxygen is transported. The blood now appears darker. The skin around the eyes is particularly thin, which is why the dark blood can be seen through very easily.

What can you do?

Consult a doctor or alternative practitioner about your dark circles under your eyes and talk about your concern that you have an iron deficiency. A blood test will give you clarity. Iron deficiency can be compensated for very well with supplements and an adapted diet. As soon as your iron levels are higher again, the dark circles under your eyes should also disappear.

Vitamin deficiency

A lack of vitamins can also lead to dark circles under the eyes. If the cause of dark circles is a lack of vitamins A, B12, C and K, you can easily remedy this with a targeted diet and dietary supplements.

What can you do?

As already mentioned, you can combat dark circles under the eyes caused by vitamin deficiency by taking supplements. If you also want to adjust your diet, the following tips will help you.

  • Vitamin A: liver, eggs, milk, spinach, carrots, cherries, grapefruit
  • Vitamin B12: Meat, fish, seafood, eggs, dairy products
  • Vitamin K: Spinach, broccoli, kale, watercress
  • Vitamin C: Rosehip, acerola cherry, citrus fruits

Lifestyle

Stress, nicotine and alcohol in excess are prime examples of an unhealthy lifestyle. They are also considered to be the cause of dark circles under the eyes. However, you can easily eliminate this cause of dark circles by changing your lifestyle.

Lack of fluids

If we drink too little, the blood vessels under the eyes shine through even more and dark circles may appear. Make sure you drink around 2.5 liters or more every day.

Lack of sleep

A lack of sleep can lead to poorer circulation and also less oxygen in the blood, which makes the blood vessels more visible. This is how the classic dark circles under the eyes are caused by a lack of sleep.
