Alaria esculenta, also known as Atlantic Wakame, is a brown algae that thrives in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the North Atlantic. While Asian Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) is used in cooking, Alaria has established itself in skincare – thanks to its unique adaptation to extreme tides and UV radiation. The algae produces fucoidans (complex sugar molecules) and phlorotannins (marine polyphenols) that protect it from dehydration and oxidative stress. These exact protective mechanisms are transferred to human skin: intensive moisture binding, collagen preservation, and neutralization of free radicals. Unlike many land plant extracts, Alaria is particularly stable in water-based formulations and works synergistically with other active ingredients.

It is derived from the fronds of Alaria esculenta, which grows in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. The algae is sustainably harvested by hand and extracted via cold maceration to preserve sensitive polysaccharides and phlorotannins. The botanical name is Alaria esculenta (Family: Alariaceae (Brown Algae)). The part used is: Thallus (entire algae body). Main regions of origin: North Atlantic (Scotland, Iceland, Norway, Canada). In modern cosmetics, extraction and processing are subject to strict quality standards according to EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009. RAU Cosmetics exclusively sources cosmetic-grade raw materials from verified suppliers.

The contained fucoidans (sulfated polysaccharides) bind water in the stratum corneum and form a hygroscopic film on the skin surface. Phlorotannins (marine polyphenols) neutralize free radicals through electron donation and inhibit collagenase activity, which slows down the enzymatic degradation of collagen. Alginic acid forms a protective gel film with skin proteins.

How it works on your skin
Deep-Acting Hydration
Fucoidans (branched polysaccharides with sulfate groups) attract water molecules through osmotic forces and bind up to 100 times their own weight in moisture. Unlike hyaluronic acid, they penetrate deeper into the upper skin layers and form a three-dimensional moisture network there. The effect is cumulative – the skin becomes increasingly plump after repeated application.
Protective Film Against Environmental Stress
Alginic acid reacts with calcium ions on the skin surface and forms a biocompatible hydrogel film. This physical shield reflects part of the UV radiation and binds heavy metal ions from the air before they can penetrate the skin. Particularly effective in urban environments with high air pollution.
Collagen Preservation via Enzyme Inhibition
Phlorotannins (aromatic polyphenols with multiple OH groups) dock onto the active center of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and block its access to collagen. This slows down the enzymatic degradation of the skin structure by up to 40%. This mechanism acts preventively against wrinkle formation.
Antioxidant Radical Scavenger
Marine polyphenols neutralize singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals through electron transfer. In contrast to land-based antioxidants, marine variants are more stable in saline environments and work synergistically with Vitamin E. They particularly protect the cell membranes of keratinocytes from lipid peroxidation.
Soothes Irritated Skin
Sulfated polysaccharides modulate the release of inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-6) from activated keratinocytes. They bind to Toll-like receptors and dampen excessive immune reactions. As a result, redness subsides and the skin barrier can regenerate.
Who is it for?
Polysaccharides bind large amounts of water and keep moisture in the stratum corneum for a long time.
Phlorotannins inhibit collagen-degrading enzymes and protect the skin structure from premature degradation.
Marine antioxidants neutralize oxidative stress caused by environmental factors such as UV radiation and air pollution.
The protective alginate film reduces transepidermal water loss without irritating the skin.
In your routine
Mornings after cleansing
Apply 2-3 drops of an Alaria-containing serum (at least 1% extract) to slightly damp skin. The polysaccharides bind residual water and transport it into deeper layers.
Before sun protection
Apply as the second-to-last layer under SPF. The alginate film reinforces the protective effect of sun protection through additional UV reflection in the short-wave range.
Evenings in combination with retinol
If you use retinol, apply the Alaria serum 10 minutes later. The soothing polysaccharides mitigate retinol-induced irritation without compromising effectiveness.
As an intensive hydration treatment
Apply a mask with 3-5% Alaria extract 1-2 times a week for 15-20 minutes. Do not wash off – gently pat in the remaining film for maximum deep hydration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Alaria esculenta extract smell like the sea or fish?
High-quality extracts obtained through cold maceration and subsequent filtration are odorless. Only low-quality raw materials with residues of proteins or lipids may have a slight marine smell. Look for products with clear declaration of the extraction process – 'water-soluble extract' is usually odorless.
Can the extract trigger iodine allergies?
Alaria esculenta naturally contains iodine, but in very small amounts (significantly less than kelp/laminaria). When used topically in cosmetic concentrations (0.1-3%), the risk of iodine exposure is minimal and harmless for most people. True iodine contact dermatitis is extremely rare. However, those who must monitor oral iodine intake (thyroid diseases) should consult a dermatologist as a precaution.
Why is Alaria better than spirulina or chlorella in skincare?
Spirulina and chlorella are freshwater algae with high protein content – good for supplements, but less ideal for skincare. As a brown algae, Alaria produces fucoidans and phlorotannins as an adaptation to the harsh marine climate – substances that specifically protect collagen and bind moisture. Freshwater algae do not have these adaptogens. Additionally, Alaria is more skin-physiologically compatible (similar pH value, salt content).
Is the algae sustainably harvested?
Reputable manufacturers harvest Alaria manually from natural stocks in Scotland, Iceland, or Norway, cutting only the fronds – the holdfast remains intact and the algae regrows. Certifications such as 'Friend of the Sea' or 'MSC' guarantee sustainable wild collection. There are hardly any aquacultures, as Alaria grows slower than laminaria. Avoid products without an indication of origin.
Can I combine Alaria extract with Vitamin C or AHA?
Yes, without any problems. The polysaccharides are pH-stable between 3-9 and are not degraded by acids. On the contrary: In combination with Vitamin C (pH 3-4), a synergistic antioxidant effect occurs – the phlorotannins regenerate oxidized Vitamin C. There is also no incompatibility with AHAs; however, you should apply the soothing Alaria layer AFTER the acid toner to buffer irritation.

Retinol vs. Bakuchiol — was ist besser?
Retinol ist der klinisch am besten belegte Anti-Aging-Wirkstoff. Bakuchiol wirkt ähnlich, ist pflanzlich — ideal für Schwangere und sehr empfindliche Haut.
